Senator John Mccain chooses Alaska Governer Sarah Palin as his VP candidate was the headline some days ago in most newspapers around the world.I wondered why on earth a newspaper based thousands of mile away from US would find this news so interesting. As a matter of fact US presidential elections get tremendous media coverage all over the world. The candidates are under constant media exposure.Every sentence they speak, every function they attend is scrutinised .Wait ..not only that...their family, their past and present relationships are all out in the media. They literally have no private life..everything they do is out in the public. Why people all over the world take so much interest in US elections?
I asked this question to myself..I,like everyone else, am equally excited by this Reality Show.Immediately I got the answer.Today we live in a globalised world. In this flat world the laws and policies of governance in different countries are vastly interrelated and thus interdependent. These networks are mainly controlled by ONE country..and that is America.Take the example of IT industry. The US is the largest market for IT products and solutions. Thus growth and development of IT companies all around the world either takes place in the US or is totally dependent on US market.Same is the case for many other areas like BPO sector, pharma sector, banking and finance, insurance, pension and the list goes on.So economies around the world today are largely dependent on the US.American foreign policies thus affect lives of millions of people .Thousands of jobs are created worldwide to cover the US markets. Any fluctuations in the NY stock exchange are reflected in various indices worldwide.
Besides the economic dependence on the US the developing countries see alliance with the US as a strategic step to safeguard their interests on world stage. The economic and political alliance with this superpower is considered beneficial on all fronts. The Indo-US Nuke Deal and many such deals with other developing countries have contributed significantly towards the progress of these countries. Some may call this as American Imperialism;where they tend to forget that ultimately its is the developing country which is benifited by this American help/interference..whatever it is..The Indo US Nuke Deal will give a boost to American Nuclear Industry by generating business worth billions of dollars...but at the same time it will help India to take one step forward in fulfilling its growing energy demands. Also it will generate emplyment opportunities for Indians.
Ultimately the foreign policies of the "to-be-elected" President gain importance during the campaigning. The candidates travel to differnt countries to portray themselves as a global leader. They speak voluminously on their foreign policies to convince the voters of their understanding of global scenario.Consequently and ironically it will be the external affairs ministry where they will be spending most of their time after they are elected.
This led me a to a thought...why the American election is decided by voters anly in America? If the American President is going to have such an impact on global politics then people all over the world should have the right to vote.
Whoever becomes the next US president this Great American Presidential Race will continue to attract interest everywhere in the world.

Great subject to make a foray into the world of blogging, Varun.
Good post. All the statements make sense.
But it is ironical that the most important global leadership is decided by the most ignoramus people. The people of US are not really concerned about the world. They can only think of their own safety and Al-Qaeda. Anybody claiming reforms in Iraq would be a hero in America......The race to the presidency is played with these things in mind. So if you just go through the websites of the different presidential candidates, even those who are out of the race, you will find these things again and again. Americans only want ot hear these words : Osama, Iraq, Kill terrorists, Global Warming.
So your suggestion of a global election for this post is very innovative.........i would suggest in this election don't allow Americans to vote !!
thanx for ur comments..u r rite..american voters will lionise anybody who claims victory in iraq or afganistan...
Achtung!
One[i]wa you have become A paranoid Android And A Nerd to the bone.

whoa!welcome to the blogosphere! gr8 post man....at last there's some known person in the blogging scenario who talks abt politics on his blog....finally there's a place where i can comment 'politically'.....keep up the good work...we expect to c the blog updated frequently...n i totally agree that every nation right from Canada to Vanuatu is interested in the US presidential race because it indirectly and inadvertently affects the global policies...everyone wants to know who'll occupy the chair in the oval office and assume the reins of an unofficial empire....
hey thanx hardik!!
